With this blog post we would like to support a very strong girl called Jana Schrautemeier. After a severe accident during a vaulting session she is fighting her way back to a new life with the support of her vaulting team and the help of equine therapy.

Jana Schrautemeier is 18 years old and comes from Paderborn. At the age of 8 she started with vaulting at the riding club Westenholz.

In a final training session before a competition, she unexpectedly fell head first doing a back walkover on the galloping horse. She suffered a comminuted fracture of the fifth and sixth cervical vertebra with damage to the spinal cord and sits since then in a wheelchair.

This was followed by a six-month hospital stay for rehabilitation and learning and finding a new life.

“Throughout my stay, my vaulting team (Team Westenholz 1) visited and supported me constantly. Without them, I would not be where I am now.”

At home, she is supported by everyone, wherever possible, too.

“Immediately after the accident I knew that I wanted to go back on the horse because I did not want to throw away ten years of horse training. During the rehab, I was allowed to join the equine therapy and from that time I knew: This is what you want to continue in any case. This way you can keep the community with the horse.”

Every week since then, a member of her former vaulting team comes to the equine therapy. The person then sits with Jana on the horse and holds her, because due to her paralysis all the back and abdominal muscles are paralyzed and her torso stability is therefore very weak.

“Nevertheless, I’m not afraid, because I trust my team that they would always hold me.”

“My desire for the future is definitely to graduate first and then to study, and in any case to maintain contact with horses.”

The problem with equine therapy and other therapies, such as a robot-assisted walking therapy, is that they are not covered by the health insurance. Therefore, a donation account was set up for Jana. With these donations, Jana can finance her ongoing therapies a bit.
